Magnetic compass adjusters

This activity is performed by Captain Alejandro Ros , who has the licence nº 86 given by the Spanish Administration (DGMM-Dirección General de la Marina Mercante) and the tariff are as follows:

 

Monday to Friday (From 08:00h to 18:00h):

Vessels up to 1.500 G: 530.00 €
Vessels between 1500 and 10.000 GT: 730.00 €
Vessels between 10.000 and 30.000 GT: 819.00 €
Vessels over 30.000 GT: 945.00 €

– Monday to Friday Overtime & (From 18:00h to 08:00h)
& Weekend and Public Holidays (From 08:00h to 18:00h): +35%
– Weekend and Public Holidays (From 18:00h to 08:00h): +65%

Rates are inclusive of:
· Mileage and travel time.
· A total of 2 hours additional time to the compass adjustment.- Pier/Pier. Exceeding time subject to applicable surcharge of 60 €/h Normal time, 80€/h. Overtime, Weekend & Public Holidays.

Remarks:
· Magnets, if required and no spares on board: 40 €/unit.
· Launch service from the pier to the ship and/or viceverse are for account of the vessel.

The magnetic compass is the primary means of navigating a ship ,consecuently the normative must be followed strictly .According to the International Stardard (ISO 25862) ,Annex G, the adjustmentof magnetic compass deviation should be like this:

GENERAL 

A properly adjusted compas shall have a residual deviation within 3 º in vessels82,5 m or more aand, 4º in vessels less than 82,5m.Accuracies shall be within 2º for safe navigation.

WHEN TO ADJUST COMPASS

Magnetic compasses should be adjusted when :

a/they are first installed

b/thye become unreliable

c/repairs or structural alterations have been made to the ship that could affect its permanent and/or induced magnetism;

d/electrical or magnetic equipment close to the compass is added,removed or altered;

e/the recorded deviations are excessive or when the compass shows physical defects; or

f/at any other time deemed necessary by the master for the safety of navigation.

All magnetic compasses shall be swung and adjusted no less often than -every two years ;

-after dry docking;

-after significant structural work.

COMPASS ADJUSTERS

Adjustment shall be carried out by a qualified compass adjuster or the ship’s master.

DEVIATION TABLE OR CURVE

Each magnetic compass is properly adjusted and its table or curve of residual deviations shall be available on board in the vicinity of the display unitof the compass at all times.
